A lot of business owners assume that on twitter they should be tweeting through their company account.  If you are a business owner that will be personally handling your company’s Twitter marketing, a better approach is to build a personal Twitter account that is used for business.  There are three reasons this is a better approach:

Become a Real Person

The key word in social media is social. People want to get to know people, not brands. It is much easier to have a conversation with a person who has a profile picture, lists there interests in their bio, and tweets like a real person. Brand accounts usually have a logo for their profile image, sales jargon for their bio, and a clear agenda to sell me something.

Eliminates the Agenda…Sort of

Tweeting through a personal account eliminates the feeling of, when is the sales pitch coming? If you tweet behind a brand your followers know that you have an agenda. No matter how genuine and helpful you are they will always wonder what is motivating you to be so helpful? When are you going to try and sell me something?

In reality Tweeting through your personal account doesn’t change your agenda, It conceals it. You never want to directly sell in social media. You want to be helpful, establish yourself as an expert, become the “go to guy” for your industry, and build relationships. It is a lot easier to achieve these objectives as a person, instead of a brand.

People Want to Buy From People They Like

It is much easier to get to know a person, than a brand. Your personal Twitter account is an opportunity to build relationships. Engage in conversations with other Twitter users. Be likable online. This is not an easy step. Most Twitter accounts simply broadcast information to the community. You want to establish a routine of tweets, re-tweets, and @ tweets using the @username syntax. This will help open up the conversation and make it easier to build relationships.

To get the most out of Twitter business owners shouldn’t hide behind their logo. To have the best results be human.
