Does Size Matter – Give Your SEO a Boost

Search Engine Optimization (SEO)

Are you looking for ways to increase your search engine traffic? Then consider growing the size of your website. The page count of your website on its own isn’t what drives the traffic to your site, they simply provide the space to work with. There are three benefits of having a larger website:

  • Provides the space for quality content
  • Increases the number of keywords your site can target
  • Increases the number of points-of-entry for your site

Provides the Space for Quality Content

If you are trying to rank higher in the search engines, then you need more content. It is no secret that search engines love content. In fact, Google says it in their webmaster guidelines regarding SEO. To understand why, you have to remember what the goal of a search engine is. Search engines are trying to serve the most relevant, helpful content possible to their users. A larger website with quality content is better suited to achieve the search engines goal than a 3 or 5 page website. The 3 or 5 page website simply does not have the room to have good content that is laid out in a way that isn’t overwhelming to the site’s visitors.

Increases the Number of Keywords Your Site Can Target

As your website grows in size it will start to cover more topics or expand on topics that are already covered. That opens the door for your site to target more keywords. Every page on your site should have one topic (excluding your home page) and target 1 to 2 keywords. If you try and target more than 2 keywords on a page, you water down the effect of that keyword making it harder for the search engines to determine the topic of the page. If you want to target additional keywords, then add another page. A good starting point is to look at your service or product pages. If you have more than one service or product on a page, split them out onto their own page (the exception is a category page which should still link to the individual product or service’s page).

Increases the Number of Entry Points for Your Site

The larger the website the more opportunities there are for your prospects to find you. The idea is very similar to a game of darts. If you are throwing your darts at a target that is very small, it is going to be more difficult to hit than a target that is 10 times bigger. To fully understand this concept you need to change the way you look at your website.

A lot of business owners I talk to think that their visitors all land on their home page and then navigate to the parts of the website that interest them. In reality, search engines will look at your website as individual pages. Remember that the goal of a search engine is to serve the most relevant content possible. Your home page is rarely relevant to a targeted search since a home page is an overview of everything your website offers. Instead the search engines will serve the page on your site that best fits the keywords that were searched. This is where everything comes together. By adding additional web pages that focus on only one topic, you have a much greater chance of driving traffic to your site through the search engines.
