Your Website: A Neglected Employee – Part 1: Hiring Process

Hiring Process

So what are the qualities you look for in an ideal employee?  This question is important because before you hire someone, or start an online marketing campaign, it’s important to know what you’re looking for.  When you look at your website, is it doing everything you wanted it to do when you had it made?  If not, chances are pretty good you didn’t have clear expectations and a marketing plan in place from the beginning.  Many businesses think that a website is like the Field of Dreams, if you build it they will come.  In reality, building a website doesn’t attract long lines of traffic, marketing does.

Defining the role you would like your website to play is the key first step to having a successful website / employee.  Ask yourself this question, “What is the overall goal of my website?”  Is it to increase traffic to your store?  Is it to inform your prospects, or customers, about your products or services?  Is it to make sales?  More than likely, you will want your website to do a few of these things at the same time, and that’s good.  However, it’s crucial to your site’s success that you have a clear vision of this goal when creating your online marketing plan.  Just as you have a clear expectation of what you want your employees to accomplish, the same holds true for your website.

Take a minute and write down on a piece of paper the overall goal for your website.  Make sure the goal is realistic, measurable, descriptive, and has a date attached to it.  For example, when we first started optimizing one of our customer’s sites they had a goal to increase traffic to their website by 20% that quarter.  This goal was realistic, measurable, and had a time frame so we could measure our level of success.  Take the time now to create similar goals.
